A Darlington engineering group has collapsed into administration in yet one more blow to the metal business. 

Round 220 jobs are in danger at Cleveland Bridge, which helped construct the Shard skyscraper in London, the Wembley Stadium arch and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. 

It’s understood the engineer’s funds have been hammered when a significant bridge-building challenge in Sri Lanka was placed on maintain due to Covid.

Cleveland Bridge, based in 1877, was in talks with its proprietor, Saudi Arabian Al-Rushaid Group, to safe an additional £6million of funds however this was unsuccessful. 

Martin Puller, a associate at Cleveland’s directors FRP Advisory, stated the corporate had been ‘a flagbearer for leading edge British engineering for greater than a century’. 

The UK’s metal business has been struggling for years however Covid has put companies underneath much more strain. 

British Metal went bust in 2019 and Sanjeev Gupta’s Liberty Metal has been preventing for survival after its essential lender Greensill Capital failed.
