THE boss of Marlboro cigarettes-maker Philip Morris Worldwide has defended his plans to purchase British pharmaceutical agency Vectura Group.

The US big this month struck a deal to purchase the Wiltshire-based agency – which specialises in respiratory medicine and is creating a therapy for Covid – for 150p a share or £1bn.

The proposed deal sparked outrage with politicians and anti-smoking charities demanding {that a} tie-up between massive tobacco and an organization that specialises in inhaled medicines for situations comparable to bronchial asthma ought to be blocked. 

However Philip Morris chief govt Jacek Olczak mentioned the corporate was dedicated to altering its picture and erasing cigarette use.

‘We will stand nonetheless and proceed promoting cigarettes or we will do one thing with the science and the know-how no less than to considerably cut back the hurt created by smoking,’ he advised CNBC.
