U.K. Health Secretary Matt Hancock apologized on Friday after a newspaper printed a photo of him kissing an aide — meaning that he broke social distancing rules.
“I accept that I breached the social distancing guidance in these circumstances. I have let people down and am very sorry,” he said. “I remain focused on working to get the country out of this pandemic, and would be grateful for privacy for my family on this personal matter.”
The opposition Labour Party called for Hancock’s resignation and accusing him of abusing power and breaking his own COVID-19 rules.
According to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, the U.K. has recorded 4.7 million cases, leading to 128,312 deaths. The U.K. also enjoys one of the highest vaccination rates after starting its campaign earlier than nearly every other country.
