Eager families were left fuming after arriving at a Surrey theme park to discover ‘chaotic’ long queues with people waiting more than ‘two hours’ to even get inside.

One person claimed that the long queues were the result of just two people taking the temperatures of visitors for the entire park, creating a hold up at the entrance.

Angry parents expressed their frustration at the massive queues outside Chessington World of Adventures on Monday, with pictures showing heaving crowds of people waiting to get in.

Some parents said they gave up and went home with their ‘crying children’ after being told it would be more than two hours to step foot inside the theme park and zoo.

Video footage showed hoards of customers at a stand-still in a socially distanced queue as they waited to get inside Chessington resort in the scorching hot weather.

The queues appeared to snake down the road and across a nearby green space, while many parents waited in the long lines with prams and young children.

Father-of-three Mark Taylor had planned to visit the theme park with his children but they left as he described the scenes as ‘crazy’.

He said: ‘We left, it was just crazy. We didn’t even join [the queue] as it was just building, building, building. We saw no staff in the queue.

‘There was just no way we could have sat in the queue for three hours. Chessington has offered to allow us to rebook.’

According to another punter, there were only two members of staff taking the temperature of every single customer entering the park.

Mikey-bt said on Twitter: ‘So now we’re two hours here, not entered, and in the queue for a bag check.

‘Only two people taking temps currently for the WHOLE park.

‘Something has failed here, and I can’t understand how Chessington believes this is normal.’

One mother took to Twitter to share her irritation after driving more than an hour to reach Chessington World of Adventures.

She fumed: ‘We’ve given up! I’ve honestly not seen anything so bad before!

‘We drove over an hour to get there with our 4yr old twins, thousands of people queuing and it not moving! Was told by staff it would be a couple of hours to get in! My twins absolutely gutted! I want a refund!’

Another person said: ‘Absolute chaos. Queues you can’t see the end of, over an hour to get in. We’ve given up and are leaving with crying children.’

And one added: ‘What is going on with the queues to gain entry?

‘I understand there is longer admission procedures but there is little or no customer service representatives to deal with the growing queues or the angry customers in the queues! Also at least offer water in this heat.’

Under the Covid safety measures mentioned on the Chessington World of Adventures Resort website, it states: ‘As well as our staff undergoing daily, non-contact temperature checks, we will also ask you (aside from babies and toddlers) to participate in such checks as a condition of entry to the Resort.’
