A DOG owner has told of his horror after his pet was savagely attacked whilst out walking.

Rascal the terrier was rushed into surgery last night, following the attack.

At around 6pm, at Newcastle Quayside next to Copthorne Hotel, it is alleged that the rescue dog was attacked by a dog who was off the lead at the time.

Brett Walker, the five-year-old’s owner, says Rascal was on the lead during the incident.

He said: “I have had two young girls contact me today that were there yesterday, they had grabbed my niece while all this was going on and they said they have not slept all night as they have been so upset.

“Another dog off its lead similar to a Bulldog breed approached and immediately attacked. The attack went on for nearly five mins and the dog owners did nothing to help the situation. Sister-in-law had to physically stand on the attacking dog’s head to release my dog. All whilst her being attacked by their second dog, a Staffie breed which also wasn’t on the lead.

“He had to go straight into surgery last night and he is back home now, he has stitches all down one side and has had a tube fitted. It’s still a bit hit and miss in case he gets an infection.”

Rascal has been part of the Hebburn family for two years.

Mr Walker said the family took him in him because he was brilliant with their young children.

The dog owner has taken to social media to warn other dog owners and said the police have been informed.

He has urged anyone with information to come forward.

Northumbria Police have been contacted for comment.
